Why Does an LED TV Have Sound but No Picture? Could the LED TV Backlight Strips Be the Problem?

An LED TV that plays normal audio but shows a completely black screen is one of the most frequent failures reported to repair shops in Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America. Many technicians open the back cover and point at the lighting circuit right away. In most cases they are right, but not in all of them. A short step-by-step check saves time, money and repeated trips.

An LED-LCD panel cannot produce light on its own. The image you see is lit entirely by the LED TV backlight strips mounted behind the LCD layer. The audio path runs as a separate circuit. When the backlight strips burn out or go open-circuit, the LED TV mainboard keeps decoding and amplifying the sound, so the set plays audio while the screen stays dark.

The quickest field check is the flashlight test. Keep the TV on a live channel or an HDMI input, dim the room, and shine a bright torch at an angle across the screen surface. Move the torch slowly and change angles. If menu text or a faint image shows through, the LCD panel and the video output of the mainboard are healthy, and the fault sits in the backlight chain — either the LED TV backlight strips themselves or the supply that feeds them.

Two other faults produce the exact same symptom. First, the power module may deliver unstable backlight voltage, so the protection circuit cuts the backlight supply even though the strips are still usable. Second, the LED TV mainboard may fail to send the backlight enable signal; the strips are intact but never light up. Measuring the backlight connector voltage with a multimeter tells the difference. Most LED TV strings run at tens of volts DC, and the sticker on the power supply or the mainboard lists the expected values. Replace parts only after the measurement confirms the fault.

Our after-sales records over the past three years match what repairmen already see in daily work. Roughly six out of ten sound-but-no-picture cases trace back to aged or burnt-out backlight strips. The rest are split between power output problems and mainboard control faults. When the strips are confirmed bad, replace the complete set rather than a single bar. The remaining old lamp beads fail soon after, and the same TV comes back for a second repair. Keeping two or three universal multi-string kits in stock covers most of the jobs in a month.

Spare part quality decides how long the fix lasts. A backlight strip with poor heat dissipation shortens the life of the whole set. Our JHT series LED TV backlight strips use an aluminum alloy base for good heat transfer, high brightness, ultra-thin structure and easy installation. Common models such as JHT033, JHT010 and JHT087 run cold-white lamp beads and carry ROHS certification, and every batch is lit and tested before packing. Ask the supplier to confirm the string count and connector layout before ordering, because a wrong-size strip wastes the whole shipment.

Local TV assemblers meet the same problem on the production line. When a TV SKD kit carries off-grade backlight strips, finished sets start coming back under warranty a few months later. When quoting SKD projects, ask the supplier for the backlight strip batch test report together with the mainboard and power module specifications, so the whole bill of materials stays traceable. Factory-tested SKD kits and spare parts keep the failure rate low and protect the assembler's margin and reputation.

One warning for technicians and end users: never open a TV case without proper training. The power module keeps dangerous high voltage even after the set is unplugged. When the diagnosis is confirmed, buy replacement parts from a supplier that openly states its factory background and test procedures.

Sichuan Junhengtai Electronic and Electric Appliance Co., Ltd. was founded in Chengdu, Sichuan in 2005 and has produced TV accessories for more than 20 years. The factory exports LED TV mainboards, LED TV power modules, LED TV backlight strips, DVB TV set boxes and TV SKD kits to more than 30 countries, with annual export sales of about USD 60 million and more than 500 customer cases. The company holds ISO 9001 quality management certification and product patents, and will exhibit at the 140th Canton Fair in October 2026.

Sound without picture is a fixable fault. Correct diagnosis, honest measurement and qualified parts keep repair shops profitable and keep end users satisfied. If you are sourcing TV spare parts or TV SKD solutions in volume, contact the JHT factory team for pricing and OEM/ODM support.
